It's been in the back of my head for awhile and probably a result of dabbling into Oblivion again, but maybe we should re-evaluate the purpose of the Jousting Field. Usually it hasn't been used for its original purpose in the past and when people have it's always really tricky. I also think it would be cool if we could expand that to monthly tournaments or something, but that would be further down the line. I dunno if a dice system would be the best for this one or if there is another, but I think this idea is definitely worth discussion.

Oh yeah! I like the idea of a Jousting Field. I think its good to hold a couple of official friendly tournaments between character as well. =3 this would be real fun. Nice one, Vig! =D

Didn't we have a tournament on the first Avaren? I recall the problem with that being that people signed up but then they didn't commit...

Aye, that was exactly the problem. XD

In order to try and make it so that the tournament actually went somewhere, we had to find a way to expell people who didn't do anything. So...a huge number of people signed up and about half never posted again and had to be booted. <_<

Well commitment aside, I brought this idea up to see how it could be done. In practice if we implement it I don't know if we'll experience similar difficulties or if it would be an entirely new outcome. Also, if we get a working system and get it running ASAP I think it would have more potential of working because this is a brand new site and not only would it get people more interested in it, but could also attract new faces as well.

I've been peeking around other sites like this to see what they're made of and none of them have a working tourney system. I'd say it would put us a notch about the others, but we just need to bash our heads together and get something on the drawing board first.

I was on a site in the past where to hold a jousting tourney we had to submit an rp sample of how we would roleplay a jousting or battle situation. There were only four spots, so an admin chose the top four post samples and then the outcome was pre-determined at random. Then the four people had to play it out. There were also runner ups that would take the place of one of the four if, come their turn, they didn't show.

People were also allowed to post, in non battle threads, what they were doing during the tournament. Sort of like spectators and they could comment to each other about what was going on and such. Sometimes big events even interrupted the matches, but this was always worked out ahead of time with the admin in charge of the tourney, so there weren't random people always trying to interrupt the battle thread.

The tournaments were held every other week so people always had a chance to try again and they could keep the number of people involved small so there was less risk of one or more of them not showing to participate. People that had participated in the previous tourney were not eligable again for the next one unless there was a shortage of people willing to participate. So you could apply every other tourney if you got in. If you didn't you could keep applying.

Sample posts had to be in by the Saturday before the tourney and the particpants were usually chosen by the end of Sunday or sometime Monday. There was a thread where the king or queen or whoever in charge would announce the knights representing whatever they represented and people could roleplay there until the tourney started. Usually the tourney posts would go on for about a week so there would be a week off with no tourney and people could get ready for the next one the following week.

It worked pretty well and it always gave people something to strive for. It was a big deal if your post was good enough to get in and you got to participate.

Anywho... Just thought I would throw that out there. Wasn't sure if you all were still interested in the whole jousting idea or if you had already come up with something better.

These were the rules which we went by the first time we attempted a tournament. I'm not positive, but one of the problems might have been in trying to jump right into the tournament before we had a chance to see which members would stick around and which would "poof" after a week or so. then again, it looks like we did the tournament about a month after opening the site.

These are the rules we had for the last tournament we tried:

Tournaments will generally be announced about a week or so before the date of the actual tournament and shall generally be held starting on a weekend. When the tournament is first announced, any special rules, restrictions on who can enter, and team sizes shall be provided along with the announcement.

It will be at that time a thread shall be made in the Jousting Field for sign-ups. If the particular tournament is a team tournament, only the team leader needs to post, saying who is part of the team and what your team name is, if any. In most cases there will be a limited number of entrants into the tournament. In that case, it will work as a first-come, first-serve basis, where only those who posted first, or those who had reserved places in the tournament will be allowed to enter.

In regards to posting, a single judge will be mod-ing each particular fight. As far as posting itself, it will be broken down into a set turn pattern, to assure everyone gets their fair chance to post and that certain people don’t spam post over and over before other participants even get a chance to act. If you have any misgivings with the fairness of your opponents RP-ing, please take your problem to a judge via PM and refrain from OOC posts in the actual battle, which would then be counted as the entirety of your turn. Judge’s are not normally part of the turn sequence, yet can cut in at anytime if they feel it is appropriate, in which case the next person who would normally be posting simply posts as normal after the judge has had his say.

If a judge declares you incapacitated, or otherwise removed from the match, his judgment is final. Furthermore, a judge can declare any powers you claim your character to possess or attempt to use as exceeding the limits your character can reach and declare said power or ability as failing.

When it is your turn to post you must do so in a timely manner, and refrain from entering a tournament unless you intend to check in and be prepared to post fairly frequently. A judge will only wait so long, about a day or two at most before declaring the person to have forfeit the match and giving the victory over to their opponent.

In addition to each tournament win being recorded for each person, which is important in itself due to advancement in rank past a certain point needs tournament wins along with posts, the overall winner of each tournament will receive a grand award.

In the event that a post has enough problems or faults in it to merit judge investigation and notification by judge of the RPer, the person must fix all of the mistakes mentioned by the judge. Also, during the time in which the post is being edited, the judge will inform the RPer's opponent of a review of the RPer's post, and the opponent does not have to post until the opponent has made sufficient changes to their post. If the changes are not made within two days of the sending of the notification, the RPer in error will be disqualified and lose the match.

If a person God-RPs in a fight once, then they are given a warning. If the person God-RPs again, the person is automatically disqualified.

If neither person posts in a fight within 5 days, then a message shall be sent to both of them. If neither person posts within 2 days of the message, both people are disqualified from the fight.
