Powers/Weaknesses:
Ashwing has all the abilities and weaknesses of an average gryphon. Gryphons are known for their incredible strength and agility. The gryphon retains these abilities, though to a lesser extent, even when it assumes human form. They have been known to kill chimeras, basilisks, young dragons and other powerful creatures.
A full fledged dragon is the only creature known to best or even equal a gryphon in combat of tooth and claw. A dragon is stronger and more powerful than a single gryphon, but the gryphon is faster and has a finer attunement to magic than the dragon. A dragon will fight with smoke and fire, but a gryphon is capable of generating magical energy that it can release in the form of a sort of lightning breath upon its aggressor. When a gryphon assumes human form, it can generate this magical energy, in the palms of its hands, in the form of small spheres of electricity that can be thrown at its enemies.
Gryphons have a natural resistance to physical weapons. When a blade strikes a gryphon, sparks fly as if the weapon has met another blade. The thick fur of a gryphon is soft to the touch, but has the strength of coiled metal and its sleek feathers are like blades. Humans have been known to take down a gryphon only when utilizing a combination of steel and magic.
Aside from being natural conduits of magical energy, gryphons are masters at finding and hoarding gold and precious metals and gems. They have a natural instinct that allows them to find even the best hidden or buried treasure. No one knows whether or not they like to line their nests or eyries with gold because of some property it has, greed, or just because like many birds they have a fascination with shiny objects.
Gryphons have many other interesting properties other than the obvious and most well known characteristics. The feathers of a gryphon are waterproof like a duck’s so even if the beast gets wet it can still take flight. The feather of a gryphon has also been said to have medicinal properties, like the ability to cure the blind and the talon of a gryphon can cure any poison. Many gryphons have been killed for their talons to make poison proof goblets for the nobility. Some magical and medicinal properties of the gryphon, like the unicorn, are still unknown.
Appearance:
Gryphon – Ashwing has the appearance of a true gryphon. Her head is that of an eagle, but for the long tufted ears that resemble a mixture of a lion’s and a horse’s. The feathers of the eagle reach to about her mid-back where the fur of the lion begins. Her entire back portion is that of a lion, including a long tufted tail. Her front quarters still have the fur of the lion, but end in sharp eagle’s talons. Ashwing’s eyes are the standard gold with black sclera. Her coloration is golden throughout, feathers, fur, and all, but for the inside of her wings and the tips of her feathers and beak. These are a dusky brown, almost black and the reason for her given name.
Human – Nina Fawx is a lithe and active looking figure with a mischievous look about her. Her golden hair is about shoulder length and is cut in feathering layers about her face and neck. The ends of her hair are all tipped black, making her look like she had somehow been flipped upside down and dipped in ink like a writing quill. Her eyes, like her hair, are golden and wild looking.
Nina wears the clothes of an entertainer and storyteller. Her shirt is made of a sheer and shimmering golden fabric that hangs loosely over a simple leather vest and white flowing shirt. A similar skirt made of varying shades of orange and cropped at a diagonal angle hangs down over a pair of simple brown leather pants and moccasin-like shoes. A single feather on a necklace, surrounded by beads hangs about her neck. This garish attire is easily covered with a simple traveling cloak or the shimmering fabric abandoned when the need arises.
