Izlin, Archmage of Avaren
Age: Appears to be about 30
Family: Scattered or dead following the destruction of Aesir
Appearance: About 6', with long black hair and a slender build. He generally wears robes and bears a staff, essentially a standard embodiment of the scholarly bookworm sort of mage.
Personality: Fairly reserved and accepting, especially considering he was one who grew up in a society that supported members distrusting and disliking those "ignorant savages" down below in Avaren.
History:
Being born into an average family in the city of Aesir, it was of no surprise that Izlin was discovered to possess the ability to use magic from a young age. Whether it was something magical about Aesir itself that granted inhabitants magical skill, something about their racial bloodline, or just the inherent power of all being that only needed to be properly accessed didn't matter. All that mattered was that Izlin could use magic and use it well. He set himself upon tome after tome concerning magical arts as soon as he was of schooling age, disregarding anything related to the history between Avaren and Aesir or even concerning the "savage" world below at all.
In those times, it was one common occurrence for young adults, still in their late teens, to band together into small groups to descend to the world below and seek adventures, explore new lands and recover powerful magical artifacts. Despite his relative ignorance about the world beyond his floating paradise, he was quick to join up with these groups of young adventurers.
Through these few years he spent adventuring with his fellow mages, he came to one single conclusion: there was no treasure forged, nor any land that existed that was more wonderful and perfect than Aesir. Thus, when he was old enough to claim to be a full-fledged adult, he decided not to leave Aesir, as many others did after spending time exploring the outside world. Instead, he chose to return to his studies of magic, building up power and influence within the prestigious schools of magic within Aesir, taking the role of teacher and mentor to young aspiring mages.
With magic, not brute strength, anything was possible. This is the idea that Izlin lived by, and until this point in his life it had proven itself time and again. Yet, then the war came and with it the fall of Aesir. For the first time in his life, Izlin's magic had failed him, for no power he possessed could save the most perfect civilization that ever existed. The only thing he could save was his own personal library and research from utter destruction.
With his ideals shattered along with his city, Izlin did the best he could to make a living side-by-side with those who only recently he had considered to be savage brutes. Despite his well-hidden prejudices, he was still among the four chosen to form the ruling council of Avaren. Accepting this position, Izlin has a newfound purpose: the establishment of a new academy of magic, to make certain the ancient arts of Aesir would never be lost.
