The canary and the coal mine.
Life is like a coal mine. At sometimes, dark, scary and risky, and other times, generous, glorious and just plain amazing. But when the canary twitters its sweet tune, be prepared, for danger is to come.
She gasped as the top ring of her corset was tightened in a swift, fluent move of one of her maids. “And, vuala.” Her most trusted maid, Felicity smiled, turning Lily around at a gentle touch of her hand. She spun around, her curled white-blonde hair twirling behind her. Her eyes were swimming in tears as Lily blinked to keep them in. “Miss Aiko, I know you wouldn’t like to see Sir James, but I’m afraid it’s for the best of your family and kingdom.” Felicity said in her sweet, motherly voice, looking at her. Lily nodded obediently wiping a strand of the charcoal part of her hair out of her crystal blue eyes. “I know it’s best for my people, but he…” her voice cracked as the tears broke out of their two blue cages. She buried her face in her hands as she shook her head violently.
Felicity frowned, putting an age withered hand on Lily’s porcelain shoulder. “I know, my child, I have seen it.” She began. Lily looked up and opened her rose lips so say something, but Felicity whipped up her hand to silence her. Lily shut her mouth and stared at her. “But you are a strong, brave, beautiful young woman, if it’s anyone I know who can handle the mess that spoiled Prince gives, it is you, Miss Aiko. You have a strong heart. You can do it.” She said, embracing Lily in a motherly hug. Lily hugged back.
Felicity was the one who broke the embrace. “Now, you must get your dress on or else you will be late.” She said, walking to the end of the huge bed that was covered in grand, silk blankets and pillows and picking up the silvery ball gown that was trimmed in a thin, elegant line of gorgeous black lace. Lily held up her fragile, slender arms in the air as Felicity flipped the gown over them and tugged it down. She gently tugged and moved the dress until it settled right. Lily looked back at her, and softly smiled when she saw Felicity was smiling at her in tears. “You look amazingly beautiful.” She said, hugging her again. “Now child, you are ready. Down you go.” She gestured to Lily, pointing to the huge, grand oak doors.
Breathing in a deep breath, Lily opened the doors and walked down the marble spiral staircase that led into the main hall. She walked down it, the heels of her shoes tapping against the floor and echoing. She paused and turned to her left, looking up at the huge doors that led to the ballroom, and otherwise used as a meeting place. This was where her number one fear was: her fiancé, Prince James Hart. She heard the canary in the coal mine, chirping in warning as she reached up to open the doors. She blinked, breathing in again, and opening them. She walked in confidently and stood in front of her father, who was side beside with James.
“Father,” she greeted him, hugging him. She turned to James. “Dear.” She greeted him, hugging him also. James hugged her tightly with force, and kissed her sloppily. Lily rolled her eyes and slightly kissed him back. She pulled back, and James pulled back angrily. “What’s wrong, Aiko?” he asked with a violent tone in his velvet voice. She gulped. “Nothing’s wrong, James.” She smiled up at him.
His eyes turned to slits. “Lie.” He snarled through his gritted white teeth, pulling up a hand. Lily’s heart began racing. “Tell me the truth.” He snarled, acting like he was going to slap Lily over the face, causing her to turn her face away. She looked up at him, tears building in her eyes. She looked around the room quickly, seeing her father had abandoned her with this nightmare of a man. She gulped, breathing in a breath. “Nothing is wrong, as I said before.” She said strongly, looking up at him. He shook his head violently, squeezing his hands into fists at his sides. “Lie again. Tell me the truth. I do not want my future wife and queen to be a liar to her own husband.” He said angrily, his menacing green eyes darting at her through slits much like a snakes.
Lily was getting sick and tired of his games. He may have been stronger than her, but he was the bad guy and she was the good guy, and in all the fairy tales she had known and lived upon for her life had told that the good guys had always won. She looked up at his peril eyes, straightening herself. “It is you, I’m afraid. I am tired of your big bad boy games and I am tired of being hit and thrown around like I am a helpless doll. I am a human being with a heart, unlike being a snake with a lump of coal in his chest.” She stated, staring at him.
His hand struck her face with such a force; she dropped to her knees, her hair in her face. She looked up at him, the vivid red hand print on her face. “And I am not tolerating it anymore.” She whispered to him, hatred filling her tinkling voice. She stood up and turned around, walking out. She felt his eyes staring at her as she left, and she smirked. She knew she had gotten herself deeper into the dark cave she called her life, but she was seeing a dim light coming from the end of it. She smiled at her idea.
She was leaving tonight for a peaceful kingdom she heard of, the kingdom of Avaren.
